Education Policy

Really interesting: President Obama has come out pretty strongly in favor of pay-for-performance for teachers, and against tenure for teachers who are underperforming.

As I've noted here before, measuring the performance of teachers is not a trivial thing. It will be interesting to see how the administration approaches this issue. The details of the policy matter, but the details are a little fuzzy just now.

Sounds like a proposition to do away with tenured positions. Reduce the overhead. Change the landscape in a hurry.

I am all for the idea of Pay for performance in education, I think they should find a way to implement that into politics as well. I spoke with a Middle school principle (my mom) before this story came out who thinks performance based pay is a great idea and that she would love to be able to cut loose of the dead weight, dead beat teachers who impede the progress of the students and the school. I too am curious about how this will be accomplished.

New York City schools have begun implementing such a system. The Economist wrote an article on it in the latter half of 2007. It would be interesting to see how the program is faring almost 2 years later.
